Today is Child Health Day in the United States. It’s a day to focus on the fundamental responsibility we all share as parents. Simply, to ensure that our kids have every opportunity to stay healthy.
The day was recognized by presidential proclamation for the first time in 1928. It recurs annually on the first Monday in October, and was renewed by President Obama this past Friday through this proclamation, a portion of which is quoted here:
“All children deserve equal opportunities to realize their potential and reach their dreams. Securing this promise for our daughters and sons begins with ensuring their health and well-being. As we pause on Child Health Day to reflect on this profound obligation, let us recommit to fostering a society where there are no limits to what our Nation’s young people can achieve.”
A big part of our mission here at Dads 4 Change is doing what we can to help fulfill the duty laid out in the president’s proclamation. Every day is Child Health Day, really, when you’re a parent.
To that end, we have begun our journey here by highlighting a few important causes that are championed by fathers, including the Cure JM Foundation, the 1Voice Foundation, Team Diabetes Canada, and the fight against Sanfilippo Syndrome. This is a good day to think seriously about what we’re doing to help our own kids have a chance at sound health, but also to look beyond our walls and consider what a difference we might make if we reach out to other kids and parents who need our help.
