The Purple Purse Challenge: End Financial Domestic Abuse

purplepurselogoCarter was asked to write about the Allstate Foundation’s Purple Purse Challenge, which is designed to increase awareness about one of the less-known aspects of domestic violence — financial abuse.

Today on his personal blog, DadScribe, Carter writes:

Financial abuse can take the form of harassment at work that threatens to cost someone a job, or by running up a mountain of debt and damaging someone’s credit. Or, simply, if someone feels financially dependent on a domestic partner, it might seem as if the choices are limited.

Purple Purse seeks to change that mindset, but also to provide needed funds.

It’s a message about empowerment. About hope. About understanding that there is always a choice, that seemingly unbreakable financial bonds are no excuse to stay in an abusive situation.

Actor Kerry Washington (“Scandal”) is the celebrity face of the challenge, which has raised nearly $1 million and runs through Friday. The challenge is designed to help people who feel trapped by their financial circumstance to escape an abusive situation without having to worry about the potential financial burden.
